Sunshine Stars – Akwa United Preview: Hosts eye return to the Nigeria Premier League summit

After their defeat against the Flying Antelopes on Sunday, Kennedy Boboye’s side aim at bouncing back with a win against the Promise Keepers

Sunshine Stars head into Wednesday’s clash against Akwa Unitedat the Akure Township Stadium hoping to continue with their unbeaten home run which will see them secure their ninth win of the season and also move to the top of the Nigeria Premier League. Alex Emenike’s 15th minute strike was enough to ensure the Akure Gunners surrender their leadership position atop the Nigeria topflight log for the third time this season – and Kennedy Boboye knows that a defeat or a draw at home will do them no favour as they continue their chase the NPFL crown.

Unlike Sunshine, Akwa United are meandering towards the relegation zone with just four win in 14 games, against their pre-season wish of securing a Caf Champions League.

The Promise Keepers failed to peg down Warri Wolves when they visited the Uyo International Stadium as they rallied to a 1-1 draw to the dismay of their fans. Emmanuel Olowo and Elijah Ogene are not sure of a place in the Akure Gunners’ starting line-up on Wednesday as they were forced out of the game against Enugu Rangers in the first half. Former coach Henry Abiodun at the start of the season insists in the top two and securing Caf Champions League football will appease the club's hierarchy, but remains adamant that his ultimate aim is to bring the Nigeria Premier League title to Akure. The game may come too soon for Tamen Medrano and captain Abe Sunday who have missed the team’s last three games.
